Simone who? Simone Veil, born Jacob on July 13, 1927 in Nice, is a French magistrate and stateswoman. Originally from a Jewish family, she was deported to Auschwitz at the age of 16 during the Holocaust, where she lost her father, brother and mother. She's a survivor with her sisters.  She entered the judiciary as a senior civil servant, and in 1974 she was appointed Minister of Health by President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, who charged her with passing the law decriminalizing a woman's use of abortion. She therefore appears as an icon in the fight against discrimination against women in France. She sat on the Constitutional Council from 1998 to 2007, before being elected to the French Academy in 2008. At the best of President Emmanuel Macron, Simone Veil entered the Pantheon on July 1, 2018.
